Emily Hughes

My current body of work consists of hand built slab vessels and porcelain functional pieces. Growing up in a quarrying town I have always been fascinated by the site itself. The harshness of the landscape and its industrial past and present continue to fuel my making.

The landscape is portrayed in this collection by the smooth areas contrasting the ripped edges that are exaggerated naturally by the clay.

Creating my work allows me to develop a closer connection to the quarry site. Representation of place and the history it holds is essential to my working practice.

During my MA I have developed an affinity for paper and its properties. I began experimenting with folding, ripping, bending and tearing into the material then decided to introduce the same methods when working with clay. Navigating different materials and their intrinsic qualities have played a major role in the process of making my work.
